Postpartum Massage in Scottsdale, AZ
Massage therapy designed to support your body through recovery and the transition into motherhood.
Your body goes through a lot of physical change during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. Postpartum massage is a gentle way to help ease muscle tension, support your recovery, and give you some much-needed time to rest and take care of yourself.
At The Scottsdale Prenatal Massage, every postpartum massage is tailored to what your body needs that day. Whether you’re dealing with neck and shoulder tension from feeding and holding your baby, low back and hip discomfort, or simply feeling worn out, your massage is designed to help you feel more comfortable, relaxed, and supported.
Benefits of Postpartum Massage
-
Pregnancy can leave you with an exaggerated anterior pelvic tilt, tight hip flexors, and rounded shoulders. Focused massage and gentle stretching help release the muscles contributing to these patterns and encourage more comfortable movement through the hips, back and shoulders.
-
Hours spent feeding, holding, and carrying your baby can contribute to rounded shoulders and tension throughout the neck and upper back. Targeted massage and stretching help open up these areas, release tight muscles, and relieve some of the postural strain that comes with caring for a newborn.
-
The changes your body goes through during pregnancy can continue to affect your low back and hips after birth. Focused work through the low back, glutes, hips, and surrounding muscles can help ease tension while stretching encourages greater mobility and comfort.
-
Your hip flexors spend months adapting to a growing belly and changing posture, and they can remain tight after pregnancy. Targeted massage and assisted stretching can help lengthen these muscles and create more freedom through the hips and pelvis.
-
The postpartum period can be physically and mentally demanding, and it can be difficult to find a moment that's truly your own. Massage gives you dedicated time to slow down, release built-up tension, and let your body fully relax.
-
The constant lifting, feeding, carrying, and caring for your baby can leave your entire body feeling tight and tired. A combination of targeted massage, stretching, and focused work allows us to address the areas that need the most attention so you can move more comfortably and feel more like yourself.
What to Expect During Your Postpartum Massage
Your comfort and safety are always the priority. Before your session begins, we’ll take time to discuss your birth experience, how your body has been feeling, and any areas you would like to focus on.
Your postpartum massage is completely customized to your current needs. Whether you need focused work on your neck and shoulders, relief for your low back and hips, or a full-body massage to help you feel more like yourself again, we’ll adjust your session accordingly. Most postpartum massages incorporate gentle stretching to help improve mobility, release tight muscles, and support better alignment.
If you have had a cesarean birth, we can also discuss whether C-Section Recovery Massage is appropriate for you and how it may complement your postpartum care.
Postpartum Massage Sessions
60-Minute Postpartum Massage
A 60-minute session is a great option for focused postpartum relief. We’ll prioritize the areas that are causing you the most discomfort while still providing relaxing, supportive work throughout the body.
90-Minute Postpartum Massage
A 90-minute session allows more time for full-body work while giving extra attention to areas that need additional support. This is a great option if you’re experiencing tension in several areas or simply want more time to relax and receive restorative care.
Postpartum Massage FAQs
-
If you had a vaginal birth, you can come in as soon as you’re feeling up to it. If you had a c-section, I recommend waiting 4-6 weeks or until your provider has cleared you for massage.
-
Postpartum massage is generally considered safe for many people. If you had a cesarean birth, experienced complications, or have any concerns about your recovery, we may recommend clearance from your healthcare provider before receiving massage.
-
Yes, but the approach will depend on how far along you are in your recovery. Your incision and surrounding tissues need time to heal, so massage directly over the incision is not appropriate during the early healing period. If you are looking for specific support for your C-section recovery, ask about our C-Section Recovery Massage.
-
The areas of focus are based on what your body needs that day. Common areas include the neck, shoulders, upper back, low back, hips, and glutes. We can also address the legs and feet when swelling or heaviness is a concern.
-
Absolutely. Breastfeeding itself does not prevent you from receiving postpartum massage. You don't need to worry about leaking or wearing a nursing bra to your appointment.
-
This depends on how your birth experience was and how your recovery is going. Bi-weekly sessions are a great way to help jump start your recovery. We can discuss your recovery goals at your appointment and figure out a schedule that works for you.
